Drivers License Classifications
- 1/16If you apply for a Class C Instructional Permit (CP)
You may drive with a licensed Class C adult (21 and above ) in the front seat. The CP is valid for 2 years and requires ID, vision, and knowledge tests.
If youre 16 or 17 and meet Joshuas Law requirements
Must complete a DDS approved driver ed course, ADAP, and 40 hours of driving (6 at night). Cannot drive 12 a.m. to 5 a.m., and has passenger restrictions.
If you turn 18 and have held a Class D license with no major violations
You can exchange your Class D for a Class C license without additional testing if you’ve had no major violations for 12 months.
If youre 18 and and never had a license before
Requires vision, knowledge, and road test; plus proof of 40 hours of driving experience, including 6 hours at night.
When applying for a Motorcycle License (Class M)
Riders must provide their own motorcycle and pass a safety inspection and road skills test. Weather can affect testing conditions.
If you drive vehicles exempt from CDL rules (volunteer firefighter)
These non commercial licenses apply to drivers of exempt commercial vehicles and are free for qualifying firefighters in Georgia.
If you operate a motorcycle and are under 18
A Motorcycle Permit (MP) requires ADAP and training. You must follow TADRA rules and may exchange MP for M after meeting all requirements.
At age 15 while enrolled in school
Must show proof of school enrollment (form DS 1), identity documents, and pass vision/knowledge tests. Consent from guardian is required if under 18.
If you’re a teen moving to Georgia with an out of state license
If valid, it may be exchanged for a Georgia license, but state specific requirements like ADAP and driving hours must still be met.
When applying for a license with military service or veteran status
Veterans must provide form DS 516 National Guard members use DS 318. Additional documentation like proof of identity and vision test is required.
If you’re under 18 and have major traffic convictions
Georgia TADRA law enforces strict penalties. Convictions for DUI, racing, reckless driving, or fleeing police can lead to suspension or denial of issuance.
When renewing your Georgia drivers license
Georgia licenses must be renewed every 8 years. At renewal, you may be asked for updated proof of address, legal presence, or name change documentation.
If you need to replace a lost or stolen license
Georgia allows license replacements through DDS Online Services or in person. Youll need ID verification and may have to pay a replacement fee.
If your license is expired for more than 2 years
Georgia requires full reexamination for licenses expired 2 and years, treating applicants like first time drivers.
When applying for a Commercial Driver License (CDL)
CDL applicants must pass knowledge and road tests, hold a CLP first, be at least 18 (21 for interstate), and meet DOT medical standards.
If youre under 21 with a DUI conviction
Georgia enforces zero tolerance. A BAC as low as 0.02% results in mandatory suspension. Repeat offenses carry longer suspensions and other penalties.
