The moped license allows operation of low-speed vehicles and is not required if the applicant already holds a regular license.
When holding a learner license
This includes no driving from 11:01 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., no phones, and a limit on passengers. Decals must be displayed.
Between the ages of 16 to 18
GDL includes obtaining a permit, supervised driving, probationary licensing, and eventual upgrade to a basic license.
When driving with a provisional license
You cannot drive during restricted hours and must wear a seatbelt. Violations may extend restrictions or lead to fines.
At 18 years or older
The basic license removes previous curfews and passenger limits if you have completed at least one year of probationary driving.
When applying for a hardship license
Unlike some states, NJ does not provide hardship licenses for work or school purposes.
To operate motorcycles
You must be at least 17, pass vision, knowledge, and road tests, or complete an approved Basic Rider Course for waivers.
When driving a vehicle under 26,001 lbs with small trailer
Vehicles that do not exceed this weight and are not for commercial use require only a basic driver license.
When operating a vehicle over 26,001 lbs with trailer over 10,000 lbs
This license includes knowledge and skills testing and may carry restrictions like air brake limitations if not fully certified.
When driving a bus with over 24 passengers or a large single vehicle
This allows driving large single-unit buses or vehicles exceeding 26,001 lbs without a large trailer.
At age 85 or older
The MVC may request periodic rechecks of health or vision at any age based on driving history or observed performance.
When under 25
Even young adult drivers face extended supervised periods and late-night curfews.
When taking the driving exam
The vehicle must have a current inspection sticker and unobstructed access to foot brakes or handbrake for the examiner.
When applying for a commercial license (CDL)
CDL applicants must pass vision, knowledge, and road skills tests, and present medical certification.
When adding a motorcycle endorsement
Riders under 18 are required to take this course. Older applicants may choose either the course or the standard test path.
When a nonresident has a valid license
CDL holders must transfer their license within 30 days. Their prior license must be surrendered.
When your license is lost or stolen
You may also choose to upgrade to a REAL ID at that time, if eligible.
When your license expires
Expired licenses over 3 years may require retesting. The renewal cycle is every 4 years.
When changing your address
This includes people moving into New Jersey. Penalties may apply for failing to update records.
When changing your name
Acceptable documents include a certified marriage certificate, court order, or divorce decree.
While driving during prohibited hours
The letter must be on official letterhead and include contact details for verification.
When failing to upgrade to a basic license at 18
You must visit an MVC Licensing Center to upgrade after 12 months of unsupervised driving.
When applying for a boat license at age 16 and above
This applies only to non-tidal, fresh water operation and is not required for tidal or saltwater areas.
