Drivers License Classifications
- 1/20If you are 15 years old
You must complete the classroom portion of driver education, pass vision and knowledge tests, and have parental consent.
When holding a learner license
The adult must sit in the front seat and be awake, sober, and alert to assist the driver.
If you are 16 to 18 years old
You must complete both phases of GDL, driver education, and hold a learner license for at least 6 months.
When driving with a provisional license
You are also restricted from driving between midnight and 5 AM except for work, school, or emergency reasons.
If you are 18 years or older
Applicants 18 to 24 must complete an approved driver education course before licensing.
When applying for a hardship license
Required documentation includes VOE form, education completion, and proof of hardship such as illness, death, or vocational need.
If you want to operate motorcycles
Requires completion of driver education and an approved motorcycle operator training course.
When driving a vehicle under 26,001 lbs with small trailer
You can tow a trailer up to 10,000 lbs GVWR or a farm trailer up to 20,000 lbs with Class C.
If operating a vehicle over 26,001 lbs with trailer over 10,000 lbs
This includes large truck-trailer combinations like semi-trucks.
If driving a bus with over 24 passengers or large single vehicle
This license also permits towing small trailers up to 10,000 lbs.
At age 85 or older
A renewal costs $9 and must be done more frequently due to age-based rules.
If youre under 25
This includes the “Impact Texas Drivers” video training before licensing.
When taking the driving exam
This usually means car insurance or a legal exemption, and the car must match the license class.
If applying for a commercial license (CDL)
Needed for operating large trucks, passenger vehicles, or hazardous material carriers.
When adding motorcycle endorsement to a license
Endorsement expires with your current license and requires a riding skills course for new riders.
If a nonresident has a valid license
This includes active military and full-time students from other states or countries with reciprocal agreements.
If your license is lost or stolen
The cost is $11 and proof of identity is required for reissuance.
When your license expires
Standard renewal costs $33 for 8 years (for age 18–84).
If you change your address or name
This can be done online or at a driver license office. Proof of name or residency change is required.
When under 18 with a license
Additional restrictions apply, and the card serves as notice for zero tolerance alcohol laws.
