Drivers License Classifications
- 1/20If you want a standard non-commercial driver license
Class E allows operation of vehicles under 26,001 lbs GVWR that are not commercial, including cars, mopeds, and light trucks.
If youre 15 years old
Must complete TLSAE course, pass vision and knowledge tests, and provide required identification.
When youre 16 and ready to drive alone
You must meet all requirements, including 50 hours of supervised driving (10 at night) and hold a learner’s license for 12 months without traffic convictions.
If youre under 18
A parent or guardian must sign your application and can withdraw consent later to cancel the license.
If youre applying for a license for the first time
Applicants must show primary ID, SSN proof, and two documents proving Florida address.
If youre a Canadian citizen
Canadians can waive Class E exams if they surrender their Canadian license at issuance.
If you are applying for a Motorcycle Only license
Applicants must pass an approved motorcycle course and can hold either a Motorcycle Only license or endorsement.
If your license expired more than 12 months ago
Depending on the situation, full vision, knowledge, and driving exams may be necessary.
When you renew your Class E license
Must pass a vision test, update address (with proof), and pay required fees; late renewals add a $15 fee.
If youre age 80 or older
The exam can be done at the DMV or through a doctor and submitted via Form HSMV 72119.
If you lost your license
Provide proper ID and documents. Fee waived if stolen and police report is shown.
If you’re not a U.S. citizen
Must provide USCIS-approved forms, passport, and visa as applicable. 60-day temporary permits may be issued.
If you need a Commercial Driver License (CDL)
Required for large vehicles, buses, and those carrying hazardous materials. Background checks apply for HazMat endorsements.
If you plan to operate a moped
A motorcycle endorsement is not required, but you must follow all traffic laws and registration rules.
If you need to take the Class E Knowledge Exam
Includes 50 multiple-choice questions on laws, safety, and traffic controls.
When taking the driving skills test
Vehicle must pass inspection and meet equipment requirements before the test can be conducted.
If your vision is worse than 20/50 in either eye
You may be referred for additional testing. Minimum field of vision is 130 degrees for license approval.
If youre caught using a false name to get a license
Penalty includes up to 5 years in prison, $5,000 fine, and a one-year suspension of license.
If you pass an approved DELAP program in school
Completing driver education in a certified school may replace the Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education requirement.
When changing your name
Examples include marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order to update license records.
