What is the Utah Learner’s Permit Test?

Utah learner’s permit test, also called written knowledge test is a 50-questioned closed-book test based on the driver’s manual issued by the Utah Driver License Division. The primary requirement to obtain a learner’s permit in Utah is to pass this written knowledge that assesses your understanding of Utah’s traffic laws and safe driving practices.

The test has multiple-choice questions about road signs and driving scenarios. You must identify the sign’s meaning and choose the most appropriate answer for a given driving condition. If you are 15 years old, you can apply for the written knowledge test if your parent or guardian approves it.

Utah Written Knowledge Test Format

The driver’s knowledge test is comprised of 50 multiple-choice questions based on the driver’s manual. There is no time limit for the test, but most people finish it within 30 minutes.

    To succeed in the Utah driver’s knowledge test, you must obtain an 80% score. You must answer 40 questions correctly and are allowed to make ten mistakes in the test.

  • Did not Pass? You Get Two More Chances

    If you fail the Utah written knowledge test, you have two more chances to retake it within six months without paying an additional fee. The DMV allows you to take a test only twice every 24 hours, so you must wait one day for a third attempt. If you fail three times, you must wait for at least three weeks or more.

    Pass a Vision Test

    After passing the knowledge test, your eyesight will be examined at the DMV office. If you need glasses to pass the test, you must wear them while driving.

    Get your Learner Permit

    You can drive with a learner permit under the supervision of your parent or guardian. Hold this permit for at least six months before applying for a temporary license.

    Take Driver Education Course

    All learner permit holders under 18 years old must complete the Driver Education course from any authorized driving school.

    Complete 40 Hours of Driving

    You must complete 40 hours of behind-the-wheel driving practice, including 10 hours at night, with a parent or guardian, and note the driving hours in the logbook.

    This open-book exam related to fatal crashes provides a training video for each section before the test. You must get a 100% score to pass this exam.

    Utah Driving Skills Test

    You must be 16 years old to apply for this practical road test. If you pass, a temporary license will be issued until your permanent license is mailed.
