Allows operation of cars, pickups, and trailers under 26,000 lbs. Not valid for commercial driving.
When towing a trailer over 10,000 lbs as part of a large combo
Required for combination vehicles over 26,001 lbs with trailers over 10,000 lbs GVWR.
At times when driving a single heavy vehicle without a large trailer
Applies to single vehicles over 26,001 lbs GVWR towing under 10,000 lbs.
If you operate a small commercial vehicle or transport 16 people
Needed for vehicles under 26,001 lbs carrying 16 passengers or transporting hazardous materials.
To drive large personal or farm vehicles over 26,000 lbs
For non-commercial large vehicles like RVs or farm equipment. CDL is not required.
For large non-commercial single vehicles
Same as CDL Class B, but used only for personal or agricultural use.
If youre 16 to 17 years old and completed driver education
Allows supervised driving with restrictions. Must hold for at least 6 months.
When driving legally without lawful presence in the U.S.
Authorizes driving in DE but is not valid as legal identification.
At the start of learning to drive
Required before a road test. Must be held for 6 months with supervised driving.
If you operate a school bus
Required to transport students. Needs background check, training, and testing.
For large non-commercial single vehicles
Required to operate a taxi or limo. Health and criminal history checks are mandatory.
When you are issued a temporary license
A temporary license is issued while your permanent one is being processed. It is typically valid for up to 60 days.
If your license has special restrictions
A restricted license limits when, where, or what type of vehicle you may drive due to court orders or medical conditions.
If issued after a DUI offense requiring a breathalyzer
Vehicle must have a breathalyzer device installed. Used to regain limited driving privileges.
When you need government-issued ID but do not drive
A photo ID card is used for identification only. It cannot be used for driving but is issued by the DMV like a driver license.
When you are a veteran seeking ID recognition
Can be added to any license/ID for free with proof of honorable military service.
At the time your address changes in Delaware
Must be reported to DMV within 30 days. Can be done online, in person, or by mail.
When your driver license is about to expire
Renew Class D licenses every 8 years for $40. Vision test may be required.
If you drive commercially before getting a full CDL
You cannot drive solo, transport passengers, or carry hazmat with only a permit.
