School Zones
- 1/20If you exceed the speed limit in a school zone
Florida imposes harsher penalties for speeding in school zones. A mandatory driver improvement course may also be required.
When a school bus displays flashing red lights
Traffic must stop unless theres a 5-foot barrier or unpaved space separating the lanes. Painted lines don’t count as dividers.
At a flashing yellow school zone light
Slow down to the posted school zone speed when yellow signals are flashing. Always watch for children.
If a school bus has its stop arm extended
Drivers must stop when the red stop arm is out and lights are flashing. Only proceed when the bus withdraws the signal.
If you illegally pass a school bus and cause injury
You may be fined $1,500, get 6 points, and must perform 120 hours of community service if injury or death occurs.
At the beginning of a marked school zone
Follow the posted school zone limit or reduce to 15–20 MPH depending on signage and time of day.
At the end of a marked school zone
Once past the End School Zone sign, youre no longer subject to reduced speed unless other hazards are present.
If a crossing guard signals you to stop
They have legal authority to direct traffic in school zones. Failure to comply is a traffic offense.
When children are near the roadway or crosswalk
Kids may behave unpredictably near schools. Always scan for movement and reduce speed before crosswalks.
If youre approaching a stopped vehicle at a school crosswalk
It may be stopped for a pedestrian. You must wait until the pedestrian fully crosses before proceeding.
If a pedestrian hybrid beacon turns red
Solid red means full stop; flashing red means stop-and-go only when the crosswalk is clear.
If a pedestrian is visually or mobility impaired
Florida law protects disabled pedestrians, including those using service animals, white canes, or wheelchairs.
At school crossings with flashing signs
Obey any posted flashing signals. Be alert even if no children are currently visible.
If caught by a speed camera in a school zone
Counties are authorized to issue automated school zone violations. Proper signage is required for camera enforcement.
When in a school parking lot where buses are loading
You must stop for school buses displaying flashing red lights, even in parking lots or on school grounds.
If you fail to stop for a school bus
Penalties increase depending on the direction and nature of the offense. Four points may be added to your driving record.
If you pass a school bus where children are boarding
Passing on the side where children are loading is considered more dangerous and results in harsher fines.
At all times near school areas
Children may be present before or after hours for extracurricular activities. Always use caution.
When approaching a school bus stop sign
Flashing amber lights warn you the bus is preparing to stop. Do not try to rush past before it does.
If your speed is not reduced in a school zone
Crashes in school zones are often preventable with slower speeds and alert driving. Failing to adjust speed is both unsafe and illegal.
