Drivers License Classifications
- 1/13Operator License (Class D)
Allows operation of vehicles 26,000 lbs GVWR and towing 10,000 lbs. Covers most personal driving needs, including mopeds.
Junior Operator License (Class DJ)
Can drive vehicles 10,000 lbs GVWR and tow 3,000 lbs. Subject to time and location restrictions until upgrading to Class D.
Non-CDL License (Class C)
Covers smaller commercial vehicles 26,000 lbs GVWR and towing 10,000 lbs, unless hazardous materials or passengers require a CDL.
Taxi/Livery License (Class E)
Permits driving vehicles that carry 14 or fewer passengers. A CDL is required if transporting disabled individuals or if vehicle qualifies as a bus.
Motorcycle License (Class M)
Authorizes operation of motorcycles and mopeds. A separate motorcycle test and knowledge exam are required.
Junior Motorcycle License (Class MJ)
Allows operation of motorcycles with specific supervision and route restrictions. Always check junior license regulations.
Commercial Driver License (Class A/B/C)
CDL is mandatory for vehicles over 26,000 lbs GVWR, buses carrying 15 above people, or those carrying placarded hazardous materials.
Enhanced Driver License (EDL)
Can be used for border travel instead of a passport. Available only to U.S. citizens residing in NY. CDL and Motorcycle can also be EDLs.
If you apply for a REAL ID license
A REAL ID is required to enter federal buildings and board domestic flights. You must show proof of legal presence and specific identity documents to obtain it.
Personal Use Vehicle R Endorsement
Issued to Class D or E holders. Requires a road test in a qualifying vehicle. No written test needed. Applies to moving household goods with a rental vehicle.
Learner Permit
Allows supervised driving while preparing for a road test. Must follow time and supervision restrictions until upgraded.
Conditional License
Allows limited driving privileges, such as travel to work or school. Issued after a DWI/DWAI suspension under specific conditions.
Commercial Learner Permit (CLP)
Must be held for at least 14 days before a road test. Only valid when accompanied by a qualified CDL holder.
