School and Residential Zone
- 1/15When driving through a school zone during posted hours
School zones require drivers to slow to 20 MPH during arrival, dismissal, or posted hours to protect children and crossing guards.
If yellow flashing school zone lights are on
Flashing lights indicate the school zone limit is in effect. You must slow down immediately, even if no children are visible.
When approaching a school bus with flashing red lights
You must stop for a school bus loading or unloading students unless on a divided highway. Failing to do so results in steep penalties.
When you enter a residential area with parked vehicles on both side
Parked vehicles can limit visibility and hide pedestrians. Drive cautiously and prepare to stop for crossing people.
If you see children playing near the road
Children may dart into the street without warning. Reducing speed gives you more time to react and avoid collisions.
When school is not in session but signs are still posted
The 20 MPH rule applies only when signs are flashing or children are present; otherwise, normal limits resume.
When you enter areas near playgrounds, parks, or child care facilities
These areas are treated similarly to school zones. Children may run into the street unexpectedly, so slowing down is critical.
If a crossing guard is present at an intersection
Crossing guards have legal authority to stop traffic. Ignoring their signals is a traffic offense in Ohio.
When driving near school buildings during lunch or recess
Students may cross in non-designated areas. Slow driving and extra awareness are necessary during all school activity periods.
When approaching a mid-block crosswalk in a school zone
Mid-block crosswalks are common near schools. Ohio law requires stopping for any pedestrian crossing the street in marked zones.
When children are getting on or off a school bus
Do not proceed until the bus resumes motion or the driver signals it’s safe. Passing early can lead to fines or license suspension.
If driving through a neighborhood with speed bumps
Speed bumps are common in residential areas to control speed. Drive over them slowly to avoid damage and maintain control.
When encountering a student safety patrol
Student patrols are authorized to control crossings. Respect their direction just as you would a stop sign or light.
If turning into a residential street with parked vehicles on both sides
Narrow streets require extra caution. Pedestrians, cyclists, or doors may emerge unexpectedly into your path.
If you’re near a school during arrival or dismissal times
Plan for slower travel and potential stops. Follow temporary traffic flow signs and be patient for student safety.
