- 1/16If you are 15 and meet school and consent requirements then,
You must pass vision and knowledge tests, have parental consent, and a School Eligibility Certificate. This permit is valid until your 18th birthday.
When you complete 180 days of safe driving with Level 1 permit
Must be 16 and above pass road test, submit log of 50 driving hours (10 at night), and have a School Eligibility Certificate.
If you are 17 and held a Level 2 GDL with no violations
Level 3 license is available to 17 year olds who completed all prior GDL phases without traffic convictions.
If you are 18 and never licensed before
You must pass vision, knowledge, and road skills tests and provide identity, SSN, and proof of WV residency.
If you only want to operate a motorcycle
You must first get a motorcycle instruction permit, then pass a motorcycle skills test or complete an approved safety course.
If you already have a license and want to ride a motorcycle
After holding a motorcycle instruction permit for 7 and above days, pass the road test or safety course to earn your motorcycle endorsement.
When applying for a motorcycle instruction permit
Applicants must pass a motorcycle knowledge test and provide proof of ID and residency. Riders under 18 must have completed Level 2 or Class E license.
If you are 18 or older and need to learn to drive
Valid for 90 days, this allows supervised driving with a licensed adult. Requires vision and knowledge test.
When applying for a For Federal Use REAL ID
Requires proof of identity, SSN, two WV residency documents, and legal name change documentation if applicable.
If you choose Not for Federal ID license, then you are
May be renewed or duplicated with fewer documents, but not valid for federal ID purposes like airport travel.
If your license is expired for more than 6 months
Vision and knowledge tests are required again. Considered a new application.
If you are under 18 and not attending school
DMV may restrict driving to specific purposes until age 17 unless a Release of Restriction is submitted.
When you move to West Virginia from out of state
Must surrender old license or provide a certified driving record from the previous state dated within 30 days.
