- 1/14When applying for your first driver license in Wisconsin
First-time applicants must complete all exams to show they can drive safely and follow traffic laws.
If you are under 18 years old, you must hold
Teen drivers must also complete 40 practice hours (10 at night) with a qualified adult before testing.
You may apply for an intermediate license
After holding a permit and completing practice hours, you can take the road test for an intermediate license.
When holding an intermediate license
Wisconsin restricts driving between 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. and limits the number of young passengers without supervision.
If you are 18 and have held an intermediate license
After 12 months of safe driving, you qualify for a full driver license without restrictions.
When your license expires
Driving with an expired license is illegal. Wisconsin requires renewal every 3 or 6 years, depending on age.
If your license is suspended
This includes paying fees, possibly taking exams again, and showing proof of insurance or court compliance.
When applying for a commercial driver license (CDL)
CDL applicants also need medical certification and must hold a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) first.
If you want to drive a motorcycle
You must pass motorcycle written and skills exams, or complete an approved training course.
When driving with a learner’s permit
The accompanying driver must be at least 25 years old with 3 years of driving experience.
If you fail the driving skills test
Wisconsin requires a waiting period and limits the number of attempts before further training is required.
When applying for a Real ID license
Real ID-compliant licenses allow federal travel and require more documentation than standard licenses.
If you move to Wisconsin from another state
You’ll need to present identification, proof of residency, and possibly pass Wisconsin tests if your license is expired.
When driving with an expired instruction permit
Instruction permits are valid for 1 year. After expiration, you must retest to obtain a new permit.
