What is the South Dakota Knowledge Test?

South Dakota knowledge test, also called a driver’s knowledge test or DMV permit test, is a written test of 25 multiple-choice questions based on the driver’s manual. This test is administered by the South Dakota Department of Public Safety to examine your knowledge of basic traffic laws, road rules, and safe driving practices.

All first-time license applicants must take this test to obtain an “Instruction Permit.” If you are at least 14 years old and pass a vision test, you can take the knowledge test by appointment at the DMV office.

South Dakota Permit Test Format and Topics

The South Dakota instruction permit test is based on the driver’s manual and consists of 25 multiple-choice questions about South Dakota traffic laws, road signs, highway signs and markings, road rules, and more.

South Dakota Knowledge Test Passing Score

The passing requirement for the knowledge test is 80%. In order to succeed in the test, you must answer 20 questions out of 25 questions correctly.

    If you fail the South Dakota written test, do not hesitate to apply again after 24 hours and retake the test.     What Happens After You Pass the South Dakota Knowledge Test?

    Instruction Permit

    Start driving on public roads under supervision with an instruction permit. You must hold this permit for 275 days (180 days if you have completed the Driver Education course).

    Student Driving Log

    Complete 50 hours of driving practice, including 10 hours at night. Your parents or guardian must note the driving hours in the student driving logbook.

    Driver Education Course

    You must get a certificate of completion for a Driver Education course from a DMV-approved center while holding an instruction permit. 

    South Dakota Drive Test

    This is a behind-the-wheel test to examine your driving skills and ability to handle a vehicle. If you are 18, you must pass this test to get your restricted minor permit/driver’s license.

    Full Unrestricted License

    If you have held your restricted permit for six months without any traffic conviction, a full license will be issued. You are not allowed to drive alone until you turn 18.
